Scene: The Return of Brilliant Bunny Brainwash
"Look who it is, little Belle! It's your favorite bunny, Brilliant Bunny Brainwash!" I held the plushie up for my sister, my life-long tormenter, my previous nemesis who'd had the gall to take my boyfriend six times over. Ever since she'd come back from her program, she'd been so much better, so much more compliant. I could see the rebellion in her eyes, somewhere... deep inside. But too deep to ever find air, not when I kept her so deeply trapped inside herself.
Belle looked up at the bunny with familiarity, with a quiet smile, almost... entranced. She kicked her feet on the changing table and reached up for the bunny, but her little sister - or, I guess I was her big sister now - pulled it away. Belle started to fuss and kick her feet harder, tears forming in her eyes.
"Mine!" she cried behind her pacifier.
"Yours?" I cocked my head and looked at the bunny, talking to it in all seriousness and with an earnest tone. "What's that, Brilliant Bunny Brainwash? You can't be Belle’s, because you wouldn't be able to help all the other little boys and girls find their place as Dependents? Oh, that's true, isn't it? But maaaaybe Belle was a good enough girl to earn some cuddles? What do you think Belle? Have you been a good girl, for Brilliant Bunny Brainwash?"
"Mine!" Belle said louder, as tears spilled down her cheeks. The pacifier fell out of her mouth and she let out a wailing scream. "My bunbun! Mine, I wan!"
Then, all of a sudden, and very unexpectedly, Belle stopped. She looked up at the bunny and a small blush came over her cheeks. I had seen that response many, many times.
"Oh? Well, I suppose you can have him, just for a little while," I said. I could never hear the sounds that came from the plushie - only Dependents could process it - but the blank smile on her face was I needed to know that it had been activated. I tucked the bunny under her arm and smiled down at my former rival. "Such a good girl."
Belle held the bunny tight to her chest and kissed it on the face. Not even a minute later, Belle wiggled in place on the table, grunting and squishing her face together in discomfort. Then, as a faint smell filled the room, she smiled up at me and giggled happily. Belle really was a good little girl now.
