Sam stepped out of the car which then pulled away from the curb. She took a deep breath before heading into the school knowing that, sooner or later, she would run into her friends and have some explaining to do. Hoping for a little time Sam dawdled as she made her way to her locker only to see Roxy, Kerry and Jane all standing around it. She started making her way towards them expecting a warm welcome back.
“There she is!” Kerry exclaimed as Sam made her way down the corridor.
“Where have you been?” Roxy asked immediately.
“Never mind that.” Jane said, “Now you guys can finally see I was right.”
This was going to be an awkward moment. Sam had never been particularly good with confrontation but now she was going to have to tell these young women to get away from her. She kept her eyes on the ground as she approached her locker. She squeezed between Roxy and Jane’s legs to reach her locker, one that was thankfully lower than the first one she had been assigned.
“Is she ignoring us?” Kerry asked puzzled.
Sam opened her locker and started putting some of the books she wouldn’t need until later inside. She could feel the eyes of the others all staring down at her.
“Sam? What’s going on?” Roxy asked.
“I can’t hang around with you anymore.” Sam said as she turned away from her locker and started walking away.
“What? Why not?” Roxy asked. The other two seemed nonplussed but Roxy actually looked a little concerned, “Where were you last week?”
“I’m… I’m sorry.” Sam said. She was still walking away but the other girls were keeping up with her with ease, “My mom says I can’t be friends with you.”
“Your mom!?” Kerry laughed, “I knew it. See, Roxy? I told you she was just a little mommy’s girl at heart.”
Sam blushed but tried not to let it show that Kerry’s words were having an effect on her. It was much easier to keep up the lie that Isabelle was her mom than explain the truth. The bell rang and everyone else in the corridor started making their way to their home rooms. Sam was just about to join them when Jane stood in front of her and blocked her from leaving.
“What do you mean?” Roxy asked from behind Sam, “You just… do what your mom tells you to?”
Sam turned to face Roxy who was looking at her as if disgusted by what she was hearing. After a few seconds trying to work out the best way out of the situation Sam realised she was just going to have to plough through and hope this was all forgotten quickly. She nodded her head. Yes, she did what Isabelle told her to do because it was the only way she would get to go home.
“See!” Jane exclaimed, “I’ve always known she was a loser!”
Sam looked at the ground. She was just waiting for the girls to finish insulting her so she could go to class. After this she knew she would be a social pariah but that was fine, she only had to last a week or two. She turned away and roughly pushed past Jane to walk quickly towards her classroom.
“Where are you going?” Jane called after her, “Need someone to babysit you?”
“Shut up!” Sam yelled, “You’re… you’re mean!”
“Aw, going to cry to mommy?” Kerry joined in.
Roxy ran around to block Sam’s path. She bent down so their faces were inches away. She smirked as she stared into Sam’s scared eyes. At that moment it felt to Sam that Roxy could literally read her mind, that the bully could see the thoughts running through Sam’s head.
“You think you’re better than us.” Roxy finally said, “Just like the rest of these losers you think you’re god’s gift to the Earth.”
“I… I don’t…” Sam replied stutteringly.
“You’ve taken your earrings out.” Roxy continued, “And you’re wearing those crappy clothes again. What was wrong with what I bought you?”
Sam didn’t really think that anything was necessarily wrong with the stuff she had bought with Roxy. She had just realised that it didn’t exactly portray the maturity she was trying to show the world. Sam looked at the ground. She just wanted to be good.
“We tried to help her not be a little freak and this is the thanks we get.” Kerry said. It sounded to Sam like she was deliberately goading Roxy to go further.
“I thought you were cool.” Roxy muttered, “But you’re nothing. You’re a freak. A stupid little baby.”
With the last word Roxy shoved Sam in the shoulder hard enough to make the little girl stumble backwards. Sam’s fists balled up and her teeth clenched. These were words she had heard a lot growing up, they were words that had made her fight her corner and got her into trouble. How she so dearly wished she could slap the smirk off Roxy’s face. She glared at her former friend.
“Go on then…” Roxy said as she tapped her cheek, “Hit me. Prove you aren’t as spineless as you look.”
Sam was sorely tempted. The red mist was threatening to come down. She was backed into a corner and her usual response would be to try and fight her way out of it. Behind her Kerry and Jane were calling Sam names. It almost became too much, Sam almost swung.
But before she could move her arm back a moment of clarity came over her. She saw Isabelle as clear as day in her mind. She wasn’t saying anything, just looking at Sam with the flat judging expression that Sam had grown so used to. The anger started to fade. Sam relaxed her tense muscles and looked straight into Roxy’s eyes.
“No.” Sam said, “If you could get out of my way, I have to get to class.”
It seemed like Roxy and her friends were momentarily stunned. Sam sidestepped Roxy and started walking quickly to her classroom. For a second she thought it was the end of the confrontation but she soon heard footsteps again. Her emotions were threatening to overtake her, she desperately wanted to get out of the situation before things escalated.
Sam tried to ignore the three other girls but they were following her. Thanks to their much longer legs a brisk stroll was all they needed to do to keep up. They started to circle Sam again, like sharks that smelled blood in the water. She’d always known they were what Isabelle would call “bad girls” but she’d never thought they would turn their focus on her.
“What are you even doing here?” Roxy asked with a shake of the head, “You’re clearly just pretending to be an adult. We all know what happened at the party.”
Sam swallowed hard as she felt a cold chill go down her spine. She had no idea how much they had seen or known, maybe they were just referring to how quickly she became wasted. Just relax, Sam tried to tell herself, she just needed to get through this week and then she wouldn’t need to see these bullies again. She sniffled as she looked away from Roxy’s piercing stare.
“What’s the matter?” Roxy asked mockingly, “Going to cry?”
“N-No…” Sam could feel a lump in her throat and every time she opened her mouth she felt like a giant sob might force its way out, “I’m… I’m just…”
“I told you she didn’t belong with us.” Kerry said to Roxy, “I don’t even know why you bothered with her.”
Sam tried to walk away. She tried to keep her head high and keep control. She had to show she was mature now, that she wouldn’t stoop to their level or embarrass herself like she might’ve done in the past.
“Where are you going?” Jane asked loudly, “We aren’t finished with you!”
“You’re bullies!” Sam cried out, “I don’t want to talk to you. Go away!”
The safety of the classroom was just ahead. She pushed past the girls again and made a beeline for the door. Reaching up to pull the handle she felt the door swing open and the relief of having other people around. Even if she was late at least she…
There was a sudden tug on her pants. Sam was in front of the class and the other girls had followed her in apparently not caring who saw them doing whatever they wanted. The teacher had been just about to ask what was going on when Sam’s pants were yanked to the ground. She immediately felt herself freeze. The class of students in front of her seemed to gasp as one.
All eyes were on Sam’s princess pink pull-up. For Sam it felt like her brain had malfunctioned and as she felt her underwear grow warm between her legs she flashed back to her middle school experience and the horrible way that had ended. As she slowly gathered her wits she bent down to pull her pants back up, by the time she was facing the rest of the students again there were whispers and strange looks though no laughter. If Sam’s mind had been in gear she might’ve realised that the general tone was of concern rather than mockery.
“I told you!” Jane yelled, “I told you I saw her wearing a diaper at the party! She was leaking everywhere too!”
“It’s not a diaper!” Sam replied desperately as she pulled her pants up, “It’s… It’s a… pull-up.”
“I can’t believe she really is a baby…” Roxy shook her head, “You guys were right.”
“I’m… I’m not!” Sam was desperately trying not to cry.
“What on Earth is going on here!?” The teacher finally demanded.
Sam had got her pants back up but she couldn’t stay in the room. She was crying and her watery eyes couldn’t see the other students, all she heard were whispers and the cruel mocking of the girls she thought had been friends. Without any more hesitation she ran for the exit of the classroom, her crying only seemed to be louder as it echoed off the walls of the nearly completely empty corridor. Somewhere behind her the teacher was shouting at Roxy and the others but that didn’t matter now.
Sam wasn’t even completely sure of where she was heading. All she knew was that she had to get away from the tormentors who had found out her horrible secret. She ran up the corridor feeling like she had blown it yet again. She had been given another chance to show how mature she was and instead had been left embarrassed and humiliated. She had burst into tears and wet herself. Isabelle would never believe she could be a big girl now.
More by luck than judgment Sam ended up at the main reception area. It was quiet except for a few students carrying notes and some teachers discussing something with folders in their hands. When Sam tearfully stepped out of the corridor in front of them all eyes turned her way. She saw the reception desk and went straight over. The woman sitting behind a glass screen was watching her with surprise.
“Yes?” The woman asked, “What’s the matter?”
“Mommy…” Sam wailed, “I… I need my Mommy!”
